Arthur Kipps – The young curious lawyer Arthur Kipps is sent to Crythin Gifford to settle the affairs of recently deceased Alice Drablow but when he meets Sam Daily and moves into Drablow’s estate, Eel Marsh House, he is haunted by a mysterious woman in black.
The Woman in Black (Jennet Humfrye) – A scorned woman sworn to keep dreaded familial secrets, deceased Jennet Humfrye, haunts Drablow’s estate out of misery as The Woman in Black and curses Kipp’s family in the end.
Sam Daily – Country born and raised Sam Daily befriends Kipps and tries his best to keep Kipps from harm when he moves into the Eel Marsh House.
Mr. Jerome – Local solicitor and the Eel Marsh House estate agent, Jerome is sought after by Kipps but refuses to give information out of fear of the estate and his experiences with The Woman in Black.
Keckwick – A silent trembling man, Keckwick was Drablow’s friend yet, is fearful of the Eel Marsh House and now, transports Kipps around Crythin.
Stella – Left behind in London, Esme was Arthur’s wife during the time of the flashback story. Arthur and Stella’s child, Joseph was killed.
Esme – Currently, Arthur’s wife with whom he fathers four stepchildren from Esme’s previous lover.
