Joey – A strong, beautiful horse (used in the play through puppetry) who remains loyal to Albert, who brought him up and has kept him from danger.
Topthorn – At first an enemy, army horse (used in the play through puppetry) Topthorn fights alongside Joey in France and learns how to survive as a farm horse from Joey.
Albert Narracott – A quiet boy who raises Joey and tries his best to shield him from harm, eventually goes to fight in the WWI and reunites with Joey.
Billy – Albert’s cousin who wants Joey for himself and later, finds Joey in World War I and is assigned to ride him.
Albert’s Father – A timid and poor man who wants the best for his son Albert.
Captain Nicholls – A lieutenant in the Calvary of World War I, Nicholls promises Albert that he will keep Joey safe during the war.
Friedrich Muller – A German officer who changes his identity in order to survive and helps Emilie and her mom to escape.
Emilie – A farm girl who aids Muller and Joey in France and helps reunite Joey with Albert at the end.
